On a roasting hot day the 4s travelled to Barnton hoping to get their season up and running again after some losses and cancellations. Having not visited Barnton before everyone was impressed with the presentation of the ground. It looked fantastic.
Losing the toss Timperley batted. Digger and Raja were comfortable enough against the opening attack of Bowyer and Batra but could take no liberties with five of the first dozen overs being maidens. The score had reached 55 and both bats were starting to pick up the pace with Raja looking good. Digger chased a wide one off the newly introduced Gregory and ballooned it to a wide third man who took a good catch. He had scored 16.
This brought Coad to the crease and in the next ten overs, him and Raja added 52 for the second wicket. Raja looked set for a big score but unfortunately gave it away to Wills, getting caught at midwicket for a well played 61 including ten fours. 107 for 2. With 14 overs left in the innings it was imperative that the batters pressed on to develop the base provided by the top order. Parkes was next out for 2 bowled by what looked like a good one from Wills and then Iveson tried to go over the top early doors only to lob the ball into the covers to be caught. 117 for 4.
Fisher came to the crease and was able to work the ball around nicely enough scoring a run a ball 20 as Coad started to accelerate. Fisher was then out caught behind off Batra and it became 156 for 5. Maddocks joined Coad and the pair of them moved the score to 188 at innings close. Coad 64 not out and Maddocks 11 not out. The pick of the Barnton bowling was provided by Wills with 3 for 13.
In reply, the Barnton innings got off to a poor start with both openers back in the shed for 6 runs, both caught behind by Fisher, one off Maddocks and the other off Goodson. Wills looked to counter attack and scored 10 before he was bowled by Maddocks to make it 19 for 3. Ranganathan and Watkins were now in and both took advantage of anything loose offered and were keeping up easily with the required run rate. However Ranganathan (19) feathered an edge to Fisher off Goodson who followed up with bowling Riley soon thereafter to make it 53 for 5.
Gregory joined Watkins and the pair of them added 51 in quick time to put doubt into the Timperley skippers mind as there were still plenty of overs left to get the 80 odd needed for victory. It was then that the persistent Mohan struck. Gregory made a good contact with a lofted drive through mid-on but Coad had dropped back sensing the shot and comfortably held the catch, some 10m in from the boundary to make it 104 for 6. Timperley felt that they now had a foot in the door for victory and strove to keep Watkins off strike to bowl at the Barnton lower order. This tactic was successful with McIlroy claiming 2, Maddocks 1 and Bangee 1 to leave Barnton 122 all out with Watkins stranded on 53 not out at the end in what was a very patient knock.
Timperley victorious by 66 runs. Maddocks and Goodson bowled well up top to claim 3 wickets apiece.
