Timperley won the toss and elected to field on an overcast day. The pitch was firm and a little green and this encouraged both batting and bowling as first options.

The Maritime opener Rasalingham took a direct approach to his batting, attacking at every opportunity. Some good shots intermingled with some ugly stuff eventually brought him 38 off 42 balls incorporating 6 fours. His partner Amalraj was more circumspect and was first to fall at 44, caught at mid on off the toiling Maddocks. He had scored 8. Rasalingham was then out at 52, playing a horrible hoik across the line to Ganguli to be bowled.

From here it gets difficult to tell an accurate story as the digital scoring goes awry. Silvarajah and Minas were at the crease and most probably got about 20 each. Minas was caught behind by Fisher off McIlroy and Selvarajah was caught by Tharcasmani off Maddocks at mid off. Sukumar was bowled by Mohan for not many (if any) before the rains started to come. A break, a little more play and an early tea were taken to no avail and then the captains agreed to call it quits with Maritime at 117 for 5 off 27 overs. The best of the bowling was provided by Maddocks with two wickets, well supported by the youngsters Ganguli and McIlroy.

A frustrating end to a day that was building towards an interesting game of cricket.
