Following last weeks car crash of a performance against Middlewich the team travelled to Lymm in hope of at least putting in a better shift. The weather was set fair and the ground and wicket looked an absolute peach in the sunshine. Lymm won the toss and elected to bat.
Parsons and Hardie opened for Lymm fronting up to Maddocks and Goodson and the first couple of overs were maidens. This slow start did not deter the batters though and they soon settled to task on what would prove to be a good wicket. Hardie was particularly severe on anything in the slot or offering any width and was severe on Goodson who had to replaced by the spin of Mohan. Hardie had reached 57 when he attempted a flashing cut off Mohan, only to be held by Fisher stood up to the wicket. 88 for 1. This then turned into 93 for 2 when Parsons also tried to cut Mohan but could not keep it down and was juggle caught by Bangee at point. He had scored 31.
With two new batters at the crease the scoring rate slowed and Mohan claimed his 3rd wicket, spearing a ball past Barraclough's defence to bowl him for 5. 101 for 3. McIlroy had replaced the unlucky Maddocks and he struck early in his spell, bowling Lee for 0 with a ball that kept slightly low. Karkhanis was then out for 20, lobbing a ball from Mohan gently into the mid wicket area for Maddocks to claim a a catch. 142 for 5.
Barker (31) was just looking to put his foot down when he smashed one back at Mohan for a smart caught and bowled and the rapid capture of Sethi and Norris's wickets made it 166 for 8. Unfortunately the Timperley bowlers did not bowl particularly well at the Lymm tail who plundered 60 runs or so in the closing overs to finish Lymm on 221 for 9. The best of the bowling being Mohan with 5 for 42 off 10 overs.
This was a stiff target for Timperley but gettable if they could develop a steady drumbeat of scoring and keep up with the rate. Unfortunately this was not possible against the steady lines and lengths of Spaven who bowled 10 overs for only 16 from the pavilion end. He claimed the wicket of Martin Lbw for 1 early in the innings, bringing Shah to the crease at 3. He batted confidently but could not escape the shackles of Spaven and Sethi. He eventually fell to Sethi for 16, drilling a shot to a deepish mid-off to be held by Norris. 37-2. With Spaven bowling economically, Fisher dropped anchor to try and see him off and hopefully quicken up against his replacement(s). Prior to his departure Spaven got Maddocks caught at mid-wicket for 1 and it became 39 for 3.
This brought Court to the crease and he played nicely enough but but could not pierce the infield with his shots and was caught at mid-wicket off Sethi for 1. Iveson came in next and opened his account with a first ball cover driven 4. He was undone soon thereafter by Sethi who bowled him with a jaffa to make it 56 for 5 with the innings well off the pace needed for victory. Coad joined Fisher and the pair of them tried to be a bit more expansive with their shots to try and close the gap but this was countered by some defensive field positions from Lymm. The pair of them put on an unbeaten 85 for the 6th wicket but never threatened running the Lymm score down to leave Lymm victorious by 77 runs. Fisher 61 not out, Coad 43 not out. A victory gained from the quickfire batting of Parsons, the steadiness of Spaven with the ball and Timperleys tardiness in bowling at the Lymm tail.
A better effort from Timperley this week but still plenty of room for improvement.
