Rustiness costs Timperley

Timperley started the 2018 campaign by welcoming Oulton Park to Stockport Road. Rob Matthews, taking over from Andy Horsfield, was able to name an extremely strong team. Although the ground staff had done a fantastic job on producing what looked to be an excellent early season track Rob Matthews asked Oulton Park to have first use of the track.

His decision appeared to be an excellent one as Fletcher removed Kettle for 0 in the first over. Unfortunately, Timperley were unable to make any other inroads as the Oulton Park were able to take advantage of some loose bowling, fielding and short boundary.

It wasn’t until the introduction of Jordan Ruff, on debut, that Timperley claimed their second wicket as a lapse in concentration saw Tomlinson (26) depart.

Latham joined Begg and whilst he looked unsure Begg continued to punish Timperley who assisted both batsmen with dropped catches and misfields. Latham in particular was lucky to survive two suicidal runs that Timperley couldn’t take advantage of.

The 3rd wicket came as a result of some good bowling as Shahnawaz Khan, pick of the Timperley bowlers, removed the dangerous Begg bowling him for a fluent 77.

As Mills joined Latham Oulton Park continued to make good progress as they frequently found the boundary, both bringing up 50s. Mills was first to go, well caught on the boundary by Dave Price. Latham was next to follow as he was stumped by Tom Maddocks down the leg side.

As they looked to kick on Timperley were able to pick two further wickets as Oulton Park closed on 276/7 from their allotted 50 overs. The wickets shared between Fletcher (2), Bevan (2), Ruff (1) and Khan (2).

Timperley went in knowing that their bowling and fielding had been below par, gifting Oulton Park 20-30 runs but were confident that with a strong batting line up they weren’t out of the reckoning just yet.

Ruff and Price opened the batting and made steady progress against the Oulton Park opening pair. Ruff (6) was first to go as Williamson castled him. Jamie Matthews joined Price and looked assured from the get go with some classy shots as the pair started to build a partnership before Price (32) was caught and bowled by Ashwell. Jamie Fisher joined Jamie Matthews as they started the job of rebuilding the innings. They put on 30 before Jamie Matthews was caught for a well made 22. Prastka soon followed which left Timperley reeling at 87/5 and looking more at saving the game than winning it. However, Rob Matthews and Jamie Fisher had other ideas as they set about the Oulton Park bowling with some particularly fierce striking. Having put exactly 50 on Rob Matthews departed for a rapid was bowled going for one shot too many. At 137/6 it was looking ominous for Timperley but Jamie Fisher and Matt Fletcher had other ideas as Fletcher took up Rob Matthews mentality as he flayed the Oulton Park bowling to all parts of the ground. Jamie Fisher joined the party as he’d found his feet as the pair of them put a show on for the Timperley crowd. Fisher bought his 50 up but was soon followed by Fletcher. After sharing a partnership of 99 of just 70 balls Fletcher was caught to the relief of Oulton Park for a fantastic 59.

At 236/7 Timperley were now back in it with Fisher well set, he simply needed someone to stay with him. Unfortunately, Maddocks was out first ball and Bevan followed quickly afterwards going for 1.
Leaving Tom Matthews to support Fisher however the innings closed out on 239 as Fisher looked to win the game himself and was bowled for an excellent 78.

Richard Smith was the pick of the Oulton Park bowlers finishing with 4/28 from 9.1 overs.
Timperley were left to rue their poor first half but can take confidence from the way went about the run chase as they look to record a win as they travel to Alderley Edge.
