Skipper stays firm despite Timperley firsts hitting rock bottom

Sam Brooks11 May - 09:31

Timperley first team are close to rock bottom recording their worst performance of the season at Nantwich.

But skipper Ed Galley is confident his under performing team will bounce back - and doesn't envisage making wholesale changes despite wins for the second, third and fifth teams.

Gyan Shanker, a 40 year old IT engineer, showed his all rounder credentials to dramatically steer the second team over the line against Nantwich's second string with a much needed 22.

The bumper home crowd was all smiles despite the rainy conditions that restricted the number of overs as Timperley, with nine wickets down, scored the winning runs following a dropped catch on the boundary.

Skipper Shanawaz Khan praised medium fast bowler Shanker for holding his nerve as the low scoring game neared conclusion.

Top scorer for the seconds was Mr Dependable Rob Matthews on 33 while his son Jamie was the top scorer on 38 for the first team flops.

That was the only highlight at Nantwich for the firsts with Galley lamenting "another thoroughly disappointing day for the firsts comprehensively beaten away."

Galley went on: "It was a mixture of good bowling, slow and low pitch conditions, and some really weak dismissals meant we posted a very poor total of 89 being bowled out within 25 overs. It was our worst performance of the season. Jamie Matthews was the only one offering any resistance with a well made 38 as everyone else fell around him."

"It needed some early wickets to give us any chance of defending such a low total, which Jono Fowler provided leaving Nantwich 6-2. Unfortunately we failed to produce many more opportunities with the ball, not for a lack of trying, and eventually Nantwich chased down the score with just three down after 17.4 overs."

Galley added: "It was another poor performance from us with things only able to get better from here. While we’ve been a long way off it after a tough run of games I’m expecting this team to show some real fight on Saturday at home to Cheadle to get us back on track. I’m confident that there’ll be a reaction and we’ll find some good form as I know there’s so much quality in that dressing room"

Christoper Hickman notched a half century for the thirds in a bad tempered victory at Oulton Park while Peter Coverley hit 96 for the fifth team who beat Stockport Georgians third team.
