Skipper Galley steers Timperley safely home

Skipper Galley steers Timperley safely home

Timperley edge top of the table Alderley in a run fest, thanks to captain Ed

If you were lucky enough to be at Stockport Road on Saturday, then you will have been treated to one of the best days of cricket in a long while.

Top of the table Alderley got off to a strong start on a batter’s wicket thanks to former Timperley player Paddy Ashling who hit a solid 67, followed up by Alfie Usher with 122. The home sides bowlers stuck at it though and kept the visitors down to 316 on a beautiful day.

That might have seemed a steep mountain to climb but there is a growing confidence in this side after a shaky first few weeks of the season and openers Jamie Matthews and Dan Scholz made a dynamic start putting on 156 for the first wicket, Aussie Scholz just missing out on a century skying one on 95. Despite a flurry of wickets the runs still flowed and Timperley didn’t lose touch with Alderley’s big total and so by the time Ed Galley came to the wicket the stage was set for the captain to grab hold of the game.

With the support of Alex Perry and Jonno Fowler the home side chipped away at the big score in front of a raucous Stockport Road crowd and as the sun went down over the noisy pavilion, the winning run was hit by tail ender Chris Page.

It was obvious what it meant to Galley as he walked off the pitch, unbeaten on 59 off 49 balls

"It was top effort from the boys, any chase over 300 is something special. Jamie and Scholzy were simply exceptional in setting up the chase, punishing absolutely anything loose and putting the Alderley Edge bowlers under immense pressure. Putting on 156 for the first wicket gave us a great platform to really attack the total"

"It was great to contribute and to hopefully entertain yet another bumper crowd down at Timperley - I think we have the best support across the county.

It was good day for the Matthews family with Jamie’s brother Tom hitting 106 for the second team in a loss to top of the table Brooklands. He and Joe Clark put together a record-breaking 151-run 6th wicket partnership, now the highest ever for the 2nd XI.

The third team also had a local derby, beating Hale Barns thanks to 5 wickets from Zaki Khalid and there was another big win this time against Oxton for the 4th team, who are on a roll.
