Selections under review for history making Timperley CC

Sam Brooks18 May - 09:28

Timperley CC has launched a SEVENTH team for the first time in the club's 150 year history.

It was the brainchild of long serving highly influential member Martin Porthouse, the newly appointed Chairman of Selectors.

Club chairman Jurjees Hasan said a change of culture was long overdue - and Porthouse's initiative would give young players aged over 13 a direct route to the club's league teams.

Under the Porthouse pathway plan the teenagers would be chosen to sample senior cricket playing like minded clubs in Sunday friendly games.

Porthouse, a 53 year old ex-Altrincham Grammar School pupil is a highly successful businessman. He was an esteemed footballer and two years ago scored a record 10,000 runs for various Timperley teams.

He and Hasan have been determined to ensure talented, in form players play in the correct team level whatever their age to ensure their progression is not hindered...and at the same time keep the enthusiastic old timers as deeply involved. That's how the idea for the team quickly dubbed the Super Sevens was set up.

Meanwhile Porthouse top scored with 39 for the Timperley third team who were well beaten at Christleton on Saturday.

That was the only game not abandoned thanks to the rain with the seconds called off after posting 174 for 9 at Cheadle while the firsts were up against it at home against Cheadle's first eleven.

Skipper Ed Galley said : "Cheadle were in control of the game at 267-5. Teenager Aryan Dash contined to perform with maturity beyond his age as the pick of our bowlers with 3 for 34 off his 10 overs."

Galley and Khan, who with the appointment of Porthouse as chairman of selectors will be under pressure to alternate more players, are nevertheless fully in support of his elevation.

Galley said it’s been great to see the introduction of a seventh team "courtesy of some amazing work from Martin Porthouse. The introduction of this side plans to give our ever growing and strong junior players, both boys and girls, an opportunity to play senior cricket and also for extending opportunities to other senior members."

Khan added: "It is a really positive step for this most ambitious club giving more exposure to youngsters playing and learning in the same Sunday teams as older players."
