Mixed weekend for record breaker Chris

Mixed weekend for record breaker Chris

Sam Brooks4 Aug - 11:39

Record breaker Chris Page and the rest of the Timperley first team came crashing down to earth when they suffered a cup KO.

The fast bowler earned his place in club folklore when he passed the 759 wickets amassed by Simon Spencer to take over the mantle for taking the most wickets.

He achieved the feat at Widnes when Timperley picked up 18 points in a "winning draw" ie not being able to take all ten home wickets.

Page, aged 37 whose day job is a scientist in Runcorn, said: "I'm proud of my achievement. It felt good to take my first of four wickets on the day with a decent bowl. Widnes didn't have any inclination to actually win the game and just about held on."

Club chairman Jurjees Hasan added: "Chris is a modern day legend at Timperley. He is incredibly consistent and we will certainly be recognising his achievement at the club AGM. Long may he continue taking wickets with his excellent technique."

Chris may be a modern day record breaker at first team level but according to club historian Gary Fisher there was a bowler namely Wilf Laidlar who got 3,000 wickets over a SIXTY year career at Timperley that began in 1920!

The chairman explained many of those wickets were at third team level...and certainly not in Cheshire's highly competitive Premier League.

Twenty four hours after the Widnes drama, the first team were beaten by over a 100 runs in the quarter finals of the Cheshire Cup by fast emerging Birkenhead based Maritime.

Page got just one further wicket as the ruthless visitors posted 282 for seven off 40 overs.

Nathan Brown top scored with a combative 53 but Timperley fell to 163 all out with six players failing to get into double figures.

Meanwhile Shahnawaz Khan 's second team enjoyed fantastic success with their biggest win of the season against Widnes.

They set a target of 273 thanks in part to superb contributions from 18 year old Rohan Parmar and Felix Birtles. Altrincham Grammar School A level pupil Parmar, who has ambitions of becoming a structural engineer, hit 127 not out and was senior player in a highly impressive partnership with Birtles who was out at 65.

Widnes stumbled to 160 in reply with the wickets shared leaving Khan to reflect on the great momentum in his much strengthened team.
