Just what the doctor ordered for record breaking skipper

Just what the doctor ordered for record breaking skipper

Sam Brooks21 Jul - 07:52

Shahnawaz Khan is a one off after becoming the first Timperley player in living memory to score 10,000 runs - and take 500 wickets.

His tremendous feat coincides with him splashing out on a Turkish hair transplant...and his smart younger look has led to opponents and team members wondering if it's really him or his brother hitting the heights!

All rounder Khan, known as the Doc as his day job is a GP, is the second team captain at the club who he joined from Stockport CC nine years ago. His runs and wickets were achieved at both clubs.

He was the university captain in Pakistan but didn't pursue a career in the sport as his father deemed the medical profession "more secure."

The Doc has the reputation at Timperley as outspoken but a fierce competitor - and at the weekend top scored with 74 from 73 balls after promoting himself to opener having been critical in recent weeks of slow batting.

Thanks to the Doc together with what he described as a sensible 68 from Manchester Grammar School pupil and county starlet Josh Van Dellen together with 66 from Jordan Ruff, the home side posted 273.

And then Neston were outclassed with Vishal Arun picking up four wickets for 45 - and were skittled to 125 all out.

The Doc was modest about him entering club folklore but praised his team's all round performance with the convincing win going a long way to preserving the once relegation threatened team's league status.

Meanwhile Timperley firsts bounced back to winning ways with a nail biting win away at Neston.

They chased down 263 with two wickets to spare. As the only win in the league due to rain affected games, Timperley managed to keep up the pressure on the top three.

Star of the show was slow left arm all rounder Joe Ashmore, new signing this year from Grappenhall, who picked up three wickets - and followed that up with a classy 88 not out.

Skipper Ed Galley said : "We took a cluster of wickets in the middle period to reduce Neston to 151 for six with 20 overs left. From here Timperley would have hoped to restrict Neston to slightly less than their eventual score of 263, but a solid hundred from overseas player Bryce Jose significantly stretched the home team's score."

He went on: "Like them we lost two early wickets, but rebuilt with Viraj Sorathia who came back into form with a well made 44, and of course our hero Joe. In true Timperley style of never doing anything easy, Jonathan Fowler after making an exceptional 63, was out with just two runs left for the win which we managed thanks to a fella known for his bowling namely Chris Page."

Next weekend sees the return of Bowdon to Stockport Road for a hotly anticipated re-run of the early season thriller - combined with Old Boys Day at TCC and a memorial piece for ex TCC Captain Brian Groves, it's set to be a busy weekend on the cards. We hope to see as many old faces as possible down next weekend to remember Brian and cheer Ed and his boys on.
