The 22 year old hit 110 in the triumph over Widnes that was marred with much controversy. There were bad feelings surrounding the home side's overseas player big hitting Aussie Tim Reynolds after he was given permission to have a runner because of a knee injury.
It didn’t hamper Reynolds who slammed 52 off 35 balls before being given a loud send off by Widnes off after his runner was ran out. Reynolds himself, had been away in Brussels earlier in the week and had been in the gym all day on Friday ahead of the game and reported that he was fit.
But there were mumblings from the opposition that he wasn't fit to start the game.
Timperley chairman Jurjees Hassan led the plaudits for opening batsman Matthews saying there was nothing better than seeing a homegrown player shine for the club.
Timperley, dubbed the Great Entertainers by skipper Ed galley after two narrow defeats got themselves back on track to catapult themselves up the league.
Batting first Widnes looked set for a 300-plus score but only managed to post 266 as they were stalled in the latter stages by some great bowling by stalwarts Nathan Brown and Chris Page.
The target was surpassed by Timperley with four overs to go. Galley recognising the contribution by Matthews, who has been under pressure so far this season also pointed to the significant brave batting performances of Reynolds and Chris McCarthy.
Galley said :“This was a great win for the boys. Big shoutout to Jamie who batted superbly and followed in the same manner as his knock against Bowdon the previous week. It was great to see him put some important knocks together especially after not getting the runs he had hoped for in Australia during the winter or in the first few weeks this season. He’s shown fantastic resilience and perseverance, and ultimately his class has shone through. There were some other good contributions which is always needed chasing down a score of 266."
