Fitting victory for Timperley

Sam Brooks28 Jul - 07:46

Jonathan Fowler was in sensational form with seven wickets for 39 runs as Timperley firsts put derby rivals Bowdon to the sword.

The big South African speedster was star of the show as Timperley restricted the visitors to 199 for 9 on a special day for the Stockport Road club.

A huge crowd turned out to pay tribute to Brian Groves, the distinguished ex-captain of the club's top three teams, former chairman and life member who died aged 87.

In his will ex-RAF man Brian bequeathed cash to club funds some of which was used to build a players' enclosure in use for the first time on Saturday.

Current skipper Ed Galley was amongst the group paying their respects to stalwart Groves' 30 years service.

Galley said:
"It was a belting day as we thrashed Bowdon by eight wickets chasing down 199 in what was a very fitting day celebrating our new Brian Groves player enclosure."

"After losing the toss and bowling first, the day belonged to opening bowler Fowler who decimated the Bowdon top order. Vice captain Fowler finished with exceptional figures which represented his best ever return for Timperley"

Timperley then took total control as Viraj Sorathia and Jamie Matthews aggressively put away any loose bowling from the visitors. They put on 144 for the opening wicket, effectively winning the game with superb Matthews finishing on 88 not out.

Timperley travel away to Widnes for their final red ball game of the season on Saturday where Fowler's strike partner Chris Page needs just one more wicket to become Timperley's leading all time wicket taker.

While Fowler was in top form on the show pitch on the other side of the ground. the Timperley thirds had Tattenhall all out for 41 in 20 overs which was overtaken in just six overs for a famous win.

Two bowlers captain Raghu Bhaskar and Ben Clark each picked up five wickets with Clark conceding just five runs.

It was much closer for the second team who lost by nine runs at Toft. There was some stellar batting from Jordan Ruff, teenager Josh Van Dellen and Rob Matthews but didn’t produce enough to achieve victory.

Around £350 was raised for bowel cancer research from a cake sale while later on Saturday a similar amount made for club funds when it was eyes down for bingo in the clubhouse.
