Anguish for Timperley firsts but record haul for teenage "King of Spin"

Sam Brooks12 May - 08:45

It’s fair to say Timperley firsts are the Great Entertainers!

Only two weeks ago the they tied at Chester Broughton Hall and on Saturday went down by just one run at local rivals Bowdon.

Zach Thompson was so close to making it a dream return having controversially made the switch to Timperley this summer. The 17 year old who has a bludgeoning reputation as a fast bowler, was at the crease as the last gasp drama unfolded with Timperley posting 287 for nine in reply to the home side's 288.

Skipper Ed Galley was the pick of the Timperley bowlers with 3-30 and hit a speedy 45 while it was Nathan Brown who top scored with 66.

Galley said: "In truth, it did look a daunting prospect to chase down 288 in front of a big crowd but the never say die spirit of our new look first team was not for backing down."

"We set about the task, with opener Jamie Matthews back in form with 63 and Joe Ashmore like Thompson joining this summer, with a solid 36. "

Galley went on : “While it was absolutely gutting to be on the wrong side of the result, it was a superb effort from our lads to come so close under enormous pressure. Credit to our supporters who turned out in force but sadly we just couldn't get it over the line for them. I'm sure they enjoyed the excitement."

The second team failed again against Toft seconds at Stockport Road with the visitors triumphing by five wickets. The Matthews father and son duo Rob and Tom were centre of attention with dad Rob slamming 65 runs and Tom picking up a rare wicket.

Skipper Shahnawaz Khan was scathing over the number of dropped catches which allowed the Toft batsmen to overtake the home score with nine overs to spare.

A clearly angry Khan said: "We didn't score enough and then our fielding again seriously let us down. We have to improve at this level."

Finally, 14 year old Aryan Dash had a day to remember after his best ever figures of six for 31 including a hat-trick against Toft 3rds - safe to say a stunning performance from the youngster as the 5s cruised to victory on Sunday.

The Cheshire county spin starlet, who is a pupil at Altrincham Grammar School, was the stand out performer for the 5s who triumphed after pegging the visitors to 155 all out.
