It is with great sadness that we have to convey the news that our friend and colleague, Tim Lucas, has passed away after a long illness.
Tim and Carol moved to the area in the late 1970’s and Tim joined Timperley Cricket Club, opening the bowling for the 2nd XI.
When his two sons, Neil and Matt started playing cricket, he ‘retired’ from playing himself to launch our junior cricket programme, encouraging youngsters to play, develop and move through into our senior teams. That ambition continues to sustain us today and has grown to almost 100 junior members this season.
His membership of the club extending to 40 years has been continuous, and he invested huge energy and passion every aspect of that affiliation. Variously, he has been Cricket Chair, Secretary, Team Captain, voluntary Groundsman, Umpire, a representative on Cheshire Cricket Board, Sports Development Chair and also Honorary Secretary of Timperley Sports Club for a number of years.
Although Cricket was undoubtedly Tim’s sport, he celebrated all of the sections within Timperley Sports Club, supporting each with objectivity and enthusiasm. If he were able, he would always be the first to offer his time in whatever endeavour or initiative was being planned. Most recently and with others, Tim proposed and wrote the initial funding bid to Sport England that has resulted in the new cricket wicket and outfield drainage system we are so hopeful for.
Given the range of roles undertaken and the longevity of Tim’s membership of our club, it is easy to understand how all of us, whatever sport we play or enjoy continue to benefit from his work. It’s also impossible for us to quantify and we can only offer our thanks.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday 18th October at 1pm at St. James church, Didsbury, M20 2RQ and afterwards the wake is being held at Timperley Sports Club.

I first got to know Tim well over twenty years ago when my sons first started to play cricket for Timperley CC. It was not long before Tim had “persuaded” me to become a junior team manager, to train to be a cricket coach and eventually to become Junior Organiser. Such were Tim’s powers of persuasion! Over the next ten years or so we became good friends and ran the junior section between us.
At Timperley, Tim has supported the Cricket Section tirelessly for as long as I have known him taking on every role conceivable including player, umpire, scorer, team manager, junior organiser, car boot money collector and secretary. Always impartial, who watching Tim umpire will ever forget the calls of how’s that Dad followed very quickly (some might say at times a little too quickly) by Tim raising his finger. Even over the last two years despite not being well Tim has helped me as Chairman and has constantly chivied me along when things need doing.
Outside of the Club Tim Chaired the Trafford Cricket Forum and played an important role in developing cricket in the clubs and schools across the Borough.
Tim had only just heard that he had been nominated for the OSCAR award 'heartbeat in the community' by the Club that was being presented at Lords this week and which he was planning to attend. He regarded it as great event to finish my involvement in Club cricket. Sadly he never made it.
Tim will be dearly missed and at this time thoughts of everyone in the cricket section are with his wife Carol, sons Neil and Matthew and daughter Hannah.
