The weather was set fair for the first game of the season and somehow the full Timperley team had assembled good to play with about 20 minutes to spare before the game started. Hallelujah!!
I find it a little off putting to see the heavy roller on a pitch some 30 minutes before stumps but maybe I am just a bit picky. The site of wriggling worms that had been rolled into the wicket at the pre toss inspection implied a low slow wicket that looked a dream to bowl on. So a big toss to win and next thing you know Suman & Phil are strapping on the pads. Things did not go well and a steady procession of batsmen heading to the wicket and back was soon in train.
Woodford bowled the ball into the right areas and this in combination with some sharp catching and injudicious shot selection soon had the team back in the hutch for a measly 56 all out. Not the most auspicious start to the season…
To return the favour Timperley were going to need to field out of their skins to get anything out of the game. Jamie Spencer opened the door, comprehensively bowling one of the openers to make it 3 for 1 and then the other opener was dropped in the slips and it could have been 6 for 2. A case of ‘what might have been’ as Woodford could have panicked then. With no scoreboard pressure the two Woodford batters waited for the bad ball and saw them home for a 9 wicket victory in around 20 overs.
A game to forget for all and we just need to be better next week.
